An eye for character.
A life devoted to art.
Portrait artist, watercolorist, caricaturist and educator. Katerina’s work brings together the discipline of a classical art education and the warmth, light and human stories of island life.

“I find it my passion to observe things and always find something extraordinary within the very ordinary.”
Born in Bulgaria and based in The Bahamas, Katerina Kovatcheva is an artist whose career moves fluently between fine art, design and education. She holds a Master’s degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia, where the foundations of observation, drawing and composition shaped a practice that continues to evolve.
Her early work in fashion design included her own studio and clothing collections. That creative breadth later extended to illustration, theatrical and hospitality design, portraiture and handcrafted work. Across watercolor, acrylic, oil, pastel, graphite and collage, her interest remains personal: the expression in a face, the gesture of a bird, the changing light over a harbour.
The Bahamas is more than a setting in her paintings. Its people, marshes, shallow seas and everyday rhythms form a visual language of belonging. Her art celebrates the extraordinary found in familiar moments, with a particular affection for human character and the natural world.
For decades, portraiture and caricature have been central to Katerina’s professional life. Her work has included RIU Hotels & Resorts in the Dominican Republic and Atlantis, Paradise Island, in The Bahamas, alongside commissions, resort events and live drawing sessions.
A portrait asks for close attention; a caricature adds playfulness and a quick understanding of character. In both, she looks beyond a resemblance to capture something recognizably human. These photographs offer a glimpse of that exchange between artist and sitter.
An award-winning artist and participant in international exhibitions and biennials, Katerina has shared her work through encounters spanning San Diego, Fabriano in Italy, Hungary, Moscow and beyond. Her career connects a Bulgarian artistic foundation with a distinctly Bahamian outlook.
As founder and representative of the International Watercolor Society in The Bahamas for over a decade, she has helped connect Bahamian watercolorists with an international community of artists. The 2016 Fabriano programme names her as a country leader; the accompanying press feature records her role in representing The Bahamas.

Her classes have achieved the highest-scoring BGCSE Art results nationwide in The Bahamas for multiple consecutive years. Behind those results is a lasting commitment to observation, imagination, technical skill and the confidence to develop an individual creative voice.
For Katerina, making art and teaching it belong to the same lifelong practice: looking closely, experimenting generously and helping others discover what they are capable of creating.
